This is subtle and deceptively insightful. Brown’s open and self-deprecating example left chesteg impact on cartoonists such as Jeffrey Brown and Ariel Schragand his sparse layouts on the likes of Anders Nilsen.

What is really going on inside his mind? One of my favorite childhood memoir comics. Maybe then we wouldn’t be cutting ourselves our tapping a vein.
He’s sullen and silent and not super clear about why. Brown is unsparing in his depictions of social awkwardness of his teenage years. Want to Read saving….
For my money, Chester Brown’s amazing historical bio of Louis Riel is better.

View all 6 comments. I didn’t see any real moments where he was struggling to interact with others; I jus I found this dull and kind of boring, and I didn’t like any of the characters, especially the lead.
Then rbown goes mad bbrown dies. Is this autobio or wish fulfillment? This is not made explicit,  but hinted at in scenes where she approaches awkward subjects with Chet and his brother Gord; the boys’ unsupportive responses feed the discomfort.
I’d always been pretty lukewarm on Chester Brown for some reason but Mari is right: Invaders from the North: He has enough women seeming to be interested in him that his love problems feel like he’s whining for the sake of it. Brown’s autobiographical work developed from a scene that had been developing since the s and which had reached a peak in the late s and early s.
There are only occasional glimpses into his thoughts.
